Identification of Carbapenemase-Producing Klebsiella Pneumoniae in a Tertiary Care Hospital from Nepal

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Prof. Dr. Navin Kumar Chaudhary, Dr. Anup Poudyal

Vol. 22, Issue 1, Jul-Dec 2026

Abstract:

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium that commonly colonizes the gastrointestinal tract. Carbapenems are β-lactam antibiotics used against multidrug-resistant pathogens. Carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (CP-KP) has been on the rise since the 1990s. Resistance mechanisms include carbapenemase production and other modifications. Common carbapenemases in K. pneumoniae include KPC, NDM, and OXA-48. Molecular detection methods PCR, have specificity, and phenotypic methods can detect a broader range of carbapenemases, making them practical for clinical laboratories.
